Disney Takes Down the Earffel Tower at Hollywood Studios
Another tragic loss occurred today at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as the Earffel Tower went down. Plans to take down the landmark were announced back in January but no one was certain when exactly the 130 foot structure would be removed. Thought the faux Earffel Tower never held any water, it was beloved icon of the park since its opening in 1989.
When the park opened, both the Earffel Tower and the Chinese Theater were the two icons that represented Disney-MGM Studios. As things began to change for the park, Disney constructed the temporary Sorcerer’s Hat in 2001, which stood as the park's icon until its removal in 2015.
The removal of the Earffel Tower was necessary to make room for the upcoming Toy Story Land. Though the Earffel Tower has not been that noticeable since Disney ceased the Studio Backlot Tour in 2014, it will be missed by long-time fans.
