Halo Wars 2 Getting Card-Based Mode
Halo Wars 2 is trying to change the way we play RTS games, by including a new card-based mode called Blitz.
The announcement was made today on Xbox Wire, and the article includes a new developer diary, which you can watch below.
"What we wanted to do is make this a non-intimidating mode. It was important that if a player wanted just one deck to pick their favorite units, that should be a visible strategy," says Creative Assembly Project Lead, Oli Smith.
Essentially Blitz eliminates the need for resource management and base building. Players collect energy throughout the map and have a deck of cards that deploy various units. The more energy you're willing to spend, the bigger the unit you can unleash, think Wraith or Scorpion.
Blitz mode is designed to get a new type of player involved in the action, with its easy to jump-into type of gameplay. Card building is simple. Each leader has access to three different decks. Players will be able to decide which deck to use to best fit their battle strategy. More cards will unlock through completing campaign missions and daily challenges.
Blitz will feature two different variations. The first is Firefight, a PvE mode, where you'll face waves on increasingly difficult enemies. You can play solo, or have up to two additional players join the battle. It's literally Firefight but in Halo Wars. Awesome! The other way to play Blitz is a PvP mode called.. PvP. This mode will allow you to go 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 in ranked or unranked battles. The goal here is to fill your team's meter by capturing and controlling various zones, similar to Domination.
Blitz seems to be an attempt to change up the RTS genre after seeing the success of sub-genres like MOBA's. Regardless of the intention, it looks like a ton of fun. Microsoft is planning a second beta for the game in early 2017. Perhaps we will get to try Blitz in the beta. The final version of Halo Wars 2 will launch on February 21, 2017 for Xbox One and Windows 10.
