Rock Band 4 "Rivals" Expansion Detailed

Rock Band 4 "Rivals" Expansion Detailed

Last October, developer Harmonix brought back the music peripheral rhythm genre by releasing Rock Band 4. In the following months, they have continued to support the game with new songs and countless updates. Now, we are getting Rock Band 4's first official expansion DLC titled Rock Band Rivals

Rock Band Rivals is essentially two new modes in one pack. The first is a new campaign mode called Rockudrama. The trailer above showcases what the new mode will look like in action. Much like VH1 Behind the Music, the game features commentary videos from other famous musicians, fans, and knowledge buffs as the story follows the career of a band. The mode is basically a satire of the once popular TV show, and adds a nice touch of humor to the Rock Band series, a game that's about playing music with plastic instruments in your living room. Rockudrama will be 1-4 players and will only feature local multiplayer.

The titular mode, Rivals, will allow up to ten players to connect online to play music asynchronously. In theory, you could have five singers, three drummers, and two guitarists. Any combination works, and it seems like just the kind of zany mode this party game needs. Each week will feature new challenges that will have one group go against another group to fight for victory. Essentially, there will be up to two teams of ten.

The team at Harmonix is now working with PDP to co-publish the game and manufacture the instruments, rather than Mad Catz. Below you can see what the new PDP made instruments look like. If you already have Rock Band instrument peripherals, they will still work just fine. Rock Band Rivals will be available for $30 standalone. For $90 you can get a bundle that comes with Rock Band 4, Rivals, the new guitar, and a microphone. Finally there's the $200 version which includes the new guitar, mic, drums, Rock Band 4, and Rivals.

All versions are now available for pre-order and depending on which retailer you pre-order with, you'll also receive 10 free bonus tracks for the game, which is nice because the expansion does not include any new songs. The trailer at the top of this article lists the 10 tracks that come with the pre-order. If you pre-order through Amazon, you'll also get two extra songs, "One More Night" by Maroon 5, and "3AM" by Matchbox Twenty.
