SEGA Announces Sonic Mania at SDCC

SEGA Announces Sonic Mania at SDCC

Last night at SEGA's party at San Diego Comic-Con, a brand new 2D Sonic game was announced. It's called Sonic Mania, and it's essentially SEGA's love letter to classic Sonic fans.

Gameplay is a combination of reimagined levels from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles, and Sonic CD, as well as some brand new levels. Graphics and animations are clearly redone completely, which you can see in the trailer above. Sonic even has a new move called Drop Dash, which allows him to dash forward after spinning in mid air. The game's three playable characters include Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

Sonic Mania is in development from not only Sonic Team, but also Christian Whitehead (who has worked on the classic games before), Headcannon Games (also worked on Sonic games before), and Pagodawest Games (creators of the Sonic-inspired game Major Magnet).

This is a really cool announcement seeing as most Sonic fans lament the change in Sonic games since the era of 3D gaming. Sonic Mania seems to be a true throwback for longtime fans of the series. Here's hoping it's a good one!
