Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Getting a Season Pass

Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will have an "Expansion Pass" available on March 3 (launch day) for $19.99. This season pass marks the first time a main entry Zelda game has offered additional DLC.

The Expansion Pass includes two main packs, as well as a bonus that buyers will receive on launch day containing "useful items," three treasure chests, and a Nintendo Switch logo t-shirt for Link to wear.

DLC Pack 1 releases in the summer and includes a Cave of Trials challenge, similar to the one in Twilight Princess HD. Most notably Pack 1 contains a hard mode, perhaps being this series' Hero Mode or mirror mode. DLC Pack 2, which comes out Holiday 2017, includes a new dungeon and a new story. NEW STORY. That's a pretty enticing piece of DLC.

Unfortunately, the DLC Packs will not be available individually, so the entire Expansion Pass will be required to receive any of the content. Nintendo has confirmed that the pass will be the exact same for both the Switch and Wii U, so that'll be weird wearing a Nintendo Switch t-shirt in the Wii U version of the game. A little bit of a middle finger to Wii U players.

Here is the official announcement video, which features series producer Eiji Aonuma explaining the "Expansion Pass" in detail.
