PS4 Update Will Improve All Games Played on Pro
PS4 Pro owners are about to get a big incentive for owning the premium PS4 model.
When PlayStation 4 firmware update 4.50 comes out, it will introduce a boost mode for the PS4 Pro. This will enhance all games, rather than just games that are patched to take advantage of the Pro's extra CPU and GPU power.
As discovered by Digital Foundry, boost mode will significantly increase and stabilize frame rates, as well as reduce load times. While this won't enhance graphics or remaster games, it does certainly help make things run smoother and more coherently.
Take a look at the video below to get a look at how boost mode effects certain games.
Here are a couple of screenshots that show the difference in frame rate. This is Knack (a game that did get a patch to support PS4 Pro). Notice how the the boost mode makes the game go from 36fps to 42fps. Of course the patch makes the game run even better at 53fps, but boost mode still offers a notable upgrade by allowing the PS4 Pro's CPU and GPU to run faster.
Next we have Driveclub. Boost mode increases the frame rate by nearly 13fps in the shot below.
Last is Rise of the Tomb Raider, a game that came to PS4 just last Fall. Notice how the frame rate is bumped to a smooth 50.
This is a pretty cool added bonus, and in some cases can even justify the upgrade to the Pro. Definately beneficial for some of those poorly ported PS4 games that sorta just chug along.
