How Portable is Nintendo Switch?

How Portable is Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo's marketing plan with the Switch has been to tout how good this machine is at being both a home console and a portable. While I've found my time with the device to be very fulfilling as a console, I am not entirely convinced of its portability.

My work commute generally consists of 45 minutes of hopping trains throughout Atlanta, and my Switch accompanies me during these trips. I find it to be a wonderful device on the train. Its screen is big and beautiful which helps keep me engaged with what is on in the game. I carry a bag to work and my Switch fits in there nicely, no complaints there. Battery? I didn't come here to make that petty excuse. The Switch is an impressive portable, and the battery life is extremely justifiable for what it is. I'm not new to 2017. I carry a portable charger in my bag like any other human. For me, the Switch's battery is not a concern.

However, one concern I have is the console's size. Yes, I just mentioned that I like the screens big beautiful display, but it can also make the device cumbersome to lug around. I'm going out of town this week, and I can't imagine when I'll use the Switch, except maybe in my hotel room. However, this brings the dock into question.

Do I bring the dock with me on my trip? The dock is quite large, and bringing it might as well make the whole experience no different than bringing my PS4 on the go. So I just bring the handheld? But then I'll want the docked mode at night when I'm playing Breath of the Wild in my hotel. These are the questions I'm struggling with. It may seem a little contrived to complain about such a thing, but the Switch offers so much at once that I find it hard to ignore all the factors at hand.

I'll be at Disney World this week (shocker). On previous trips I've brought my 3DS, knowing it'll get me through tough the long lines. I'm not sure that I want to bring my Switch to the parks. It's larger, more fragile, and the experiences are more demanding of my undivided attention. I don't think I will be able to fully enjoy exploring the world of Hyrule while I'm in line for Space Mountain.

This is just a little something that has been on my mind. I've still yet to render a verdict. Perhaps this week will tell. I love the Switch, and while sometimes it can be the best portable of all time, other times it can be too much to bring outside the house. Food for thought, I suppose, or perhaps I'm just being a little bitch.
