PlayStation 3 Ends Production in Japan

PlayStation 3 Ends Production in Japan

It seems that the long-running PlayStation 3 console is coming to the end of its production cycle in Japan.

According to Gematsu Sony has ceased production of the 500GB black model of the PS3, which was the only one left in production. The website reads that shipments of the PS3 hardware has "ended."

Although the PS3 might be out of the mindshare of the general public by now, it isn't unusual for consoles to be sold well after their predecessors are released, especially when they've enjoyed the financial success of consoles like the PS2. Sony was practically selling PS2 games until 2011.

PS3 launched in November of 2006, and although it stumbled out the gate and had a rough first few years on the market, it eventually managed to catch up to Microsoft's highly successful Xbox 360, and even eclipse it in sales by 2013.

Rest in piece PS3. You were the least likable home console to me, but you sure did bring us a ton of awesome console exclusives.
