What's the Best Way to Enjoy Episodic Adventure Games?

They're all the rage these days. Between Telltale and a couple other developers, we now have so many episodic adventure games to play.

The problem is that episodes are usually spaced out around three months at a time. Three months can be quite a sizable chunk of time, especially when compared to a cable TV show. It's one thing to wait a week or two, but in two or three months you can totally forget all the major plot points of the story.

It makes sense, though. These are video games, they need time to be developed. It's no secret (especially when playing a Telltale game) that these games are made minute to minute, down to the wire. It usually shows in the game's performance and visuals. However, there is an alternate way to enjoy these games, if you have the patience, that is.

You could just wait until an entire season of a game is completed before jumping in. It's not a perfect solution, you miss out on the conversation, you risk losing interest in the game as it gets older, and honestly it's easy for games to get pushed to the back of your mind the longer you wait on playing them.

For fear of those reasons alone I recently jumped into Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy game. It's great, but after four hours I was already done with episodes one and two. Now I'm fully invested in this story, but I won't find out what happens in episode three until August 22. After that there's no telling how long it will be until I can experience episodes four and five. By the time the game is completed, it'll likely be the tail end of 2017, and by then, I'll be so far removed from what I just experienced in this game.

Waiting until the whole season is finished is a great solution. You can take your time, or play the whole thing in one big chunk. It'll make the entire experience feel more like a full game. But I also feel like I shouldn't have to wait until the game is old news just to play it.

It's a weird one. I'd be interested to see what an episodic adventure game would be like if the entire thing was made at once and then just released as a full package. I like the episodic style so that players can space out play sessions, but I think it would be an interesting development to make an episodic game release all at once.

Either way, I'm just waiting to find out what happens between Gamora and Nebula. Until late August, I guess...
